Brown Poha Upma ( Aval Uppumaavu )
Brown Aval available in Chennai @ Cholayil Sanjeevanam ( Mogappair, Nungambakkam & Adyar ) and other leading supermarkets.
Serves: 2
You will need
2 cups brown poha, Indian standard measuring cup of 200 ml / 8 oz capacity
1/4 cup water
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoon oil
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1/2 teaspoon jeera ( cumin seeds )
1/4 teaspoon urad dal
1/2 -inch piece ginger, finely chopped
1 spring curry leaves
2 green chilli , slit lengthwise
2 tablespoon grated coconut ( optional )
1/4 cup water
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoon oil

1/2 teaspoon jeera ( cumin seeds )
1/4 teaspoon urad dal

2 tablespoon grated coconut ( optional )
Method
Mix 1/4 cup water and 1/2 teaspoon water.
Sprinkle this water on brown poha and rub it slowly with fingers ( Do not soak poha in water ).
In a pan, heat oil. Add mustard seeds. When they begin to pop add cumin ( jeera ) seeds, urad dal, slit green chilli, chopped ginger and curry leaves. Saute for 3 - 4 minutes / you will get a nice aroma.

Add softened poha and mix well. Cover with a lid and cook for 2 minutes. Do not add water.
Sprinkle grated coconut ( optional ) and serve hot. It’s a tasty, low calorie evening snack.
