Nethili / Kozhuva / Anchovies Fish Fry

A tasty and crispy Kerala style fish fry. Goes well with rice or serve as a starter !!

Serves: 2 - 3

Ingredients

250 g nethili / kozhuva /anchovies

¾ teaspoon red chilli powder

¼ teaspoon turmeric powder

¼ teaspoon pepper powder

½ teaspoon thick tamarind paste

6 – 10 curry leaves

½ to ¾ teaspoon salt (or to taste)

150 ml oil (to fry)

Method

Wash and clean nethili fish until you will get a clear water. Drain out water thoroughly and wipe each fish with a soft kitchen towel.

In a wide bowl, marinate fish with red chilli powder, turmeric powder, pepper powder, thick tamarind paste, curry leaves and salt (do not add water and marinate evenly). Cover keep aside for one hour.

Heat oil in a pan (1/2 – inch from the base of the kadai / frying pan). Reduce the heat to medium and deep fry fish (in 2 batches) until golden brown color and crisp on both the sides. Drain and place on kitchen towel to absorb extra oil. Serve with rice or as a starter. It is a good accompaniment with fish curry meals.
