Karnataka Style Coconut Chutney

Karnataka Style Coconut Chutney

A delicious chutney, goes well with Neer dosa / Dosa / Idli / Vada … Recipe from Karnataka cuisine by Ranee Vijaya Kuttaiah !!

Serves:2 - 3

Ingredients

5 tablespoon grated coconut

2 garlic cloves

1 big green chilli, chopped

2 teaspoon tamarind juice (soak 1 teaspoon tamarind in 4 teaspoon water for half an hour and strain tamarind juice through a fine sieve) or 1/2 teaspoon thick tamarind paste

½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)

2 teaspoon dry roasted urad dal (black gram lentil)

2 tablespoon water

Method

In an iron kadai / frying pan, gently dry roast urad dal until color changes / fragrant and crisp on a medium heat (approximate dry roasting time 7 minutes).

Transfer all the ingredients into a small mixer bowl and make a smooth and thick paste. This chutney is very tasty if it is thick in consistency.

For seasoning:

1 teaspoon oil

½ teaspoon mustard seeds

3 curry leaves

1 dried red chilli, halved

Method

Heat oil in a small pan. Add mustard seeds. When the crackle, add curry leaves and halved red chilli. Saute for 2 minutes until crisp. Pour the seasoning over chutney and serve as side dish with Neer dosa / Dosa / Idli / Vada ..
