Valakkai / Vazhakkai / RawBanana / Plantain Podimas
A tasty side dish with rice in Tamil cuisine. Recipe from
Tamil Nadu cuisine by Ranee Vijaya Kuttaiah !!!
Serves: 3 – 4
Ingredients
2 plantain (valakkai / vazhakkai / raw banana)
Peel off the skin gently and cut into ¼ - inch cubes. In a
bowl, boil 1 cup / 200 ml water with ¼ teaspoon turmeric and ½ teaspoon salt, and coarsely mashed.
For the seasoning:
1 tablespoon oil
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1/2 teaspoon urad dal (black gram dal)
1 onion, finely chopped
2 green chillies, slit lengthwise
6 curry leaves
Boiled and mashed plantain
Extra salt to taste
2 tablespoon grated coconut
2 teaspoon lemon juice
Method
Heat oil in a pan / kadai. Add mustard seeds. When they
crackle, add urad dal. Fry on a low heat for 1 minute.
Add onion and fry till golden color on a medium to low heat.
Add green chilies and curry leaves. Fry on a low heat for 1
minute.
Add mashed plantain and adjust salt to taste. Mix all the ingredients
well and cook on a low heat for 5 minutes.
Finally add lemon juice and grated coconut. Mix well until
all the ingredients well combined. Serve as a side dish with rice.
Goes well with Hot Rice..
