Green Tomato Dal

A tasty dal, made of green tomatoes and Indian spices. Best with rotis / parathas / rice …

Serves: 4

For the  dal:

1 cup / 200 ml tur dal (or 1/2 cup / 100 ml masoor dal (pink color dal) Indian standard measuring cup of 100 ml / 4 oz capacity and ½ cup / 100 ml tur dal (Indian standard measuring cup of 100 ml / 4 oz capacity or a mix of masoor dal, tur dal,  moong dal and channa dal (Bengal gram)

3 cups / 600 ml water

1/2 teaspoon oil

1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder

Method

For the  dal:

Wash and soak dal / dals in a pressure cooker for thirty minutes. Add  oil, turmeric powder  and pressure cook for 20 minutes or until done / soft (reduce the heat to medium after 2nd whistle and cook for 15 minute). Switch off the heat. Allow the cooker to cool naturally. Open the lid.

Other ingredients

3 green tomatoes, sliced or chopped

2 green  green chillies, slit lengthwise

½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)


















Method

In a bowl, boil boiled dal with sliced green tomatoes, slit green chillies and salt. Cover with a lid and boil on a medium to low heat for 10 – 12 minutes until tomatoes well cooked.

For the tadka / seasoning:

1 tablespoon oil

1 teaspoon jeera (cumin seeds)

1 onion, finely sliced

6 garlic cloves, very finely chopped (optional)

¼  teaspoon red chilli powder

¼ teaspoon turmeric powder

1 teaspoon chopped coriander leaves

Method

Dilute red chilli powder and  turmeric powder in 1 teaspoon water and keep aside (spice mix).

In a pan or kadai, heat oil. Add  jeera and fry on a low heat until fragrant.

Add sliced onion and garlic (optional) and fry on a low to medium heat until crisp and golden color.

Add diluted spice mix and stir well on a low heat for 2 – 3 minutes until the raw smell goes and spices well combined with onion.

Pour this seasoning over tomato dal and mix well until tadka well combined. Sprinkle chopped coriander leaves and serve with rotis / rice / parathas ..
