Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market, Bangkok, Thailand

Khlong Lat Mayom is one of the three floating markets located close to Bangkok, no more than twenty kilometres from town and accessible by taxi from Wongwian Yai (the last BTS station on the Silom Line). Khlong Lat Mayom is nothing like the huge touristy Damnoen Saduak or the crowded Amphawa but really has the charm and authenticity of a local market.  Traditional Thai delicacies and fresh fruits also available. Organised  boat tour from the floating market is 60 Thai Baht for 1  ½ hour ride.

Opening Hours: Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm.

How to get there: Take a taxi from Wongwian Yai BTS station. Exit No 1. The taxi taxi should cost only 130 – 150 Thai baht. Travel time approximately 20 – 25 minutes. Metered Taxis easily available at floating market too.

Or Tor Kor Market is biggest food market in Bangkok.

Location: Kamphaengphet Road, opposite Chatuchak Weekend Market

MRT: Kamphaeng Phet

How to get there: Take the MRT subway to Kamphaeng Phet station. Exit no 2 for Chatuchak weekend market.  Exit number three, and you're in the market.

Pattaya Fried Rice (Nasi Goreng Pattaya)



Pattaya Fried Rice ( Omelette wrapped fried rice. Very popular in Malaysia and Thailand ) !!

Here's the recipe of Prawns Fried Rice.

Serves: 1

You will need

For omelette:

2 eggs

2 teaspoon milk

1/2 teaspoon corn flour or all purpose flour

Salt to taste ( 1/4 teaspoon )

2 teaspoon cooking oil

Method

Whisk egg, milk, corn flour / all purpose flour and salt together in a medium bowl until soft peaks form ( quantity will be double ).

Lightly coat an omelet pan (11 - inches in diameter ) or big skillet with cooking oil and heat over medium heat 1 minute. Pour omelette mixture into pan, spread it evenly and cook until mixture begin to set on bottom.

The underside should be light golden in color.

Once it turn light golden color, remove carefully with a flat spatula. Omelette is ready now.

For fried rice:

Serves: 1

You will need

You can use cooked prawns or cooked boneless chicken instead of vegetables.

1 cup ( 100 g ) cooked and cooled rice ( rice should not be overcooked )

1 tablespoon oil

1 bunch spring onion, finely chopped

6 cloves garlic, finely chopped

2 teaspoon tomato sauce

2 tablespoon capsicum, chopped

2 tablespoon carrot, finely chopped

1/2 teaspoon salt ( or to taste )

1/2 teaspoon pepper powder ( optional )

1/2 teaspoon oyster sauce (optional)

Method

For Fried Rice:

In another wide pan / wok, heat oil. Add chopped spring onions and garlic and fry for 6 - 8 minutes.

Add tomato sauce and stir well.

Add finely chopped carrot and capsicum (or boiled chicken / prawns). Saute for 3 - 4 minutes.

Add cooked and cooled rice and salt to taste. Mix well. Do not cover with lid. Stir continuously and fry for 8 minutes on a low heat. Sprinkle pepper powder / oyster sauce if you required.

Final presentation:

Place omelette on a serving plate and arrange fried rice in the centre of the omelette and wrap carefully ( like a packet ). Serve with tomato slices, cucumber slices and chilly sauce.

Coconut Custard



Coconut Custard

A tasty dessert in Thai Cuisine !!!!

Makes: 3 small custard moulds

You will need

2 eggs
3 tablespoons soft brown sugar
1 cup (125 ml thick coconut milk
1 teaspoon vanilla essence

Method

Whisk eggs and sugar in a bowl till smooth.

Add thick coconut milk , vanilla essence and mix well again.

Pour custard mixture into each custard moulds (3/4 th of the mould) or flat bowl and cover this with aluminum foil or grease proof paper.

Steam in pressure cooker ( without weight ) or steamer for 30 - 35 minutes on a medium heat. (or pour the custard mixture in a baking dish and bake at 150 * C or 300 * F for about 35 - 40 minutes or until the custard is set).

Remove from steamer and keep aside to cool for 15 - 20 minutes.

Unmould and serve warm or cool ( Place a plate on top of the custard bowl and carefully flip it upside down ).

Thai Red Chicken Curry



Thai Red Chicken Curry ( Hot & Spicy )

Serves: 3

You will need

2 teaspoon cooking oil
25 g Thai red curry paste
200 ml thick coconut milk
300 g chicken pieces
1 tablespoon Fish Sauce
1 tablespoon fresh basil leaves ( optional )

Method

Heat the oil in a large skillet on medium-high heat.

Add the curry paste and stir until bubbling.

Add the chicken pieces and saute on a medium heat for 5 minutes.
.
Add thick coconut milk and mix it well. Cover with a lid and cook on a low heat for 15 minutes or till 3/4 th done.

Add fish sauce and cook again for 10 minutes or till done.

Garnish with basil or coriander leaves.

Serve with rice or noodles.
