Tamil Style Onion Chutney
A quick & tasty chutney made of less ingredients, goes well
with Idli / Dosa varieties !!
Serves: 2
Ingredients
1 teaspoon oil
½ teaspoon mustard seeds
1 teaspoon urad dal
¼ teaspoon asafoetida (hing / kaayam)
2 dried red chillies
1 big onion, roughly chopped (1 big size or 2 small size)
1 teaspoon tamarind juice / extract or ½ teaspoon thick
tamarind paste
Less than ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
Method
Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds. When they crackle, add
urad dal, hing and red chillies. Fry on a low heat until crisp and fragrant.
Add chopped onion and fry until light pink color (until the
raw smell of onion disappears). Switch off the heat and keep aside to cool for
15 minutes.
Transfer all the ingredients into a small mixer bowl and
make a smooth paste in a mixer. Do not add water when making chutney. It should
be a thick chutney. Serve as a side dish
with idli / dosa / vada …
