Homemade Chat Masala

Homemade Chat Masala

Chat Masala is a sour /salt spice mix in North Indian cuisine. The appropriate translation of the name is ‘’ finger licking’’. It’s sprinkled over North Indian snacks / salad as a condiment; for added flavor.

Makes: 70 g

You will need

2 tablespoon cumin seeds (jeera)

1 1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds

1 tablespoon garam masala (curry powder or North Indian garam masala powder)

1 tablespoon mango powder (amchur powder)

1 tablespoon black salt

1 teaspoon pepper powder

1 pinch asafoetida powder (hing)

1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

Method

In a kadai / frying pan, dry roast fennel seeds and cumin seeds on a low heat until fragrant (approximately 10 minutes) and then make a powder of cumin and fennel seeds and combine with remaining ingredients. Store in an airtight container.

Chat masala can also be sprinkled over cut fruits like pine apple, raw mango, cut banana's etc for added flavor.

A delightful spice blend! I love the fact that it contains mango powder. I’ll have to visit my Indian market if I want to make chat Masala .
